MICG appoints new Chair

The Midlands Industrial Ceramics Group has appointed a new Chair, Jonathan Phillips, of Morgan Advanced Materials.

A graduate of Imperial College London, where he trained as a materials scientist, Jonathan’s career began in the field of precious metals before focusing on ceramics.

Over the past two decades, Jonathan has worked for leading UK companies, including Johnson Matthey and, currently, Morgan Advanced Materials.

His work has primarily focused on the development of high-performance ceramics, with applications in nuclear waste disposal, catalysis, aerospace, and renewable energy.

Jonathan has held various leadership roles, guiding research teams in developing innovative materials solutions and processes, while also providing industrial advice to university departments and supporting collaborative projects across multiple sectors.

He said: “It is with great honour and enthusiasm that I take on the role of Chair of the Midlands Industrial Ceramics Group (MICG).

“Stepping into this position is both a privilege and a responsibility, and I wholeheartedly acknowledge the outstanding work that Ian Edmonds has done in leading the MICG over the past four years.

“I am incredibly proud to lead such a forward-thinking and innovative organisation, one that stands at the forefront of the advanced ceramics sector.

“With our talented team and wealth of expertise within the group, I look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead to further strengthen MICG’s role as a driver of innovation, growth, and sustainability in this vital industry.

“Looking to the future, my plans are centred around fostering collaboration across our sector, ensuring we remain at the forefront of technological advancements.

“We aim to create a platform where members can unite to address shared challenges, from developing sustainable manufacturing processes to exploring innovative technologies. There is also a tremendous opportunity to align our initiatives with the broader UK industrial strategy, particularly in areas such as clean energy, digital manufacturing, and advanced materials.

“MICG will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of ceramics, not only within the Midlands but also on a global scale.

“The advanced ceramics sector is crucial not only to the regional economy but also to the nation’s industrial landscape. With its rich history in ceramics, the Midlands has evolved into a global hub of innovation, home to some of the world’s leading research institutions and businesses.

“The applications of advanced ceramics—ranging from aerospace and defence to healthcare and clean energy—are vast and constantly expanding.

“As Chair, I am committed to positioning MICG and the Midlands as key players in driving this sector forward, fostering innovation, attracting investment, and ensuring we continue to lead in developing innovative materials and solutions.

“In taking on this role, I am not only excited by the opportunities ahead but also deeply committed to preserving and enhancing the Midlands’ legacy in ceramics. Together, I believe we can pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for the advanced ceramics industry.
